At present the organization of the Faculty consists of four departments, which are responsible for education and research activities at the Masters and Ph.D. levels. The departments are as follows:

  • The Department of Environmental Engineering, with Masters and Doctoral degrees

  • The Department of Environmental Planning and Management, with Masters degree (the Ph.D. program is in process.)

  • The Department of Environmental Design, with Masters degree.

  • The Department of Natural Disaster Mitigation, with masters degree.

The Faculty, began its educational activities in Full 1993. To fulfill its activities, the Faculty was equipped with the following facilities:

A. Laboratories, including:

  • Water and waste-water

  •  Hydraulic

  • Air pollution

  • Solid waste

  • Chemical

 

B. Other facilities, including:

  • Library

  • Computer center

  • Studios

  • Research section

 

Major funding for these facilities and also for the new building was provided by the plan and Budget Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran Through a long-term research grant entitled “ The comprehensive Study of Environmental Issues in the City of Tehran” This collaboration between the University and the executive branch of government was the first sign of cooperation for the sake of environment protection and promotion.

 

Research

 

Research activities of the Faculty continues to cover a wide variety of topics in various fields of  environments such as optimization of water collection, distribution, waste water  collection and treatment, industrial waste water treatment, air and water treatment, air and water quality management, recovery and recycling of wastes, hydrology and water resources, groundwater as well as marine pollution, solid and hazardous waste management.

Following are examples of the completed research projects:

  • Determination and removal of T.H.M in Tehran drinking water.

  • Multiple Box Model for Dispersion of Air Pollutants from Area Sources in Iran.

  • Comprehensive plan for Municipal solid waste management in Iran.

  • Comprehensive management plan for the Golestan National Park.

  • Environmental Impact assessment of development in Tehran, Kermanshah, Hormozgan, and Mazanderan Provinces.

  • Study of industrial waste treatment in major Iranian cities.

  • Indicators of urban environment quality.

Currently, the Faculty has some thirty members, which are involved in the education and research activities.

 During the last ten years the Institute and Faculty have played significant roles in changing the attitudes of the people, authorities, decision-makers and other experts towards environmental issues. The shaping of the first NGOs in Iran such the Iranian Society of Environmentalists, the Green Peace of Iran, Women for the Environment, etc. was initiated or facilitated by the Faculty. In fact the establishment of the Faculty was a turning point in environment and has now became the focal point of all kinds of  environmental activities from the grass root level of public awareness to the professional level of research and education. The Journal of Environmental Studies "SCIENTIFIC REPORT SERIES OF THE ENVIRONMENT" is a publication of the Faculty of Environment, and the most prestigious Journal in the field of environment in the country.
